Hey all,

I've created a free iPad/iPhone app for iOS 6.0 (and above) which allows you to browse and read most of the Archive's content and also allows you to make a playlist for MP3 and movies, to make it easy to listen to a bunch of different items at once.

If you have a strong enough 'net connection on your iPad or iPhone, the streaming works pretty well.

Not trying to spam, or promote the thing necessarily as it's completely free. But as someone who is into music and the eclectic stuff here on the Archive, I just wanted to share the app for anyone who found it fun or useful.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/internet-archive-companion/id617179709?mt=8

Feedback on the app is welcomed too.

I just tried your app and it seems to work great. But I did find one problem to report:

I have a friend who is completely blind, and using VoiceOver to operate her ipod touch. She enjoys listening to old-time radio, and was overjoyed that she could listen to the Scarlet Pimpernel using your app. But she can't use your app after that. The problem is that VoiceOver does not list the 'speaker' button that lets you dismiss the audio-video window and access the list of audio files to listen to. If she were sighted she could simply find the speaker button and swipe it down, but being blind, that is out of the question. Can you help?

gosh, that is an interesting problem...

perhaps. I can give the button some title text, which I think will not show, but perhaps the VoiceOver will announce.

I should name it "toggle player button" or something...

I'll look into this!!

Thanks for the feedback!

Also looking further, I bet the problem is that the "speaker" button is in an embedded controller that VoiceOver isn't initially looking for.... unless pressed...

again, I'll love more into this.

Thanks so much for this app! I have enjoyed countless hours of GD music commuting to work listening to it.

Recently (in the past few weeks) all the shows have been showing up out of order and with multiple versions of the same song, is there a a setting on my phone or within the app I can change to stop this?

also, it would be great if I didn't have to restart my search everytime I use the app, It briefly ahows me where I am (May 1977 for instance) and then says updating records and stars me in 1965 again, any fixes for this?

Thanks!!!

This app = My mind blown.
I have been using another developers app with much frustration. It is clunky and has constant errors. This is well polished and darn sexy. However, there is one thing I can not figure out.Is there a way to make a playlist or get an entire live concert to stream in succession? I listen to a lot of Grateful Dead on the Archive and I have been clicking on each song to send to player one by one. Am I missing something? Thank you for your hard work!

Hi Charlie,

Well, I'm afraid the only way to add a file to the player is one at a time. The previous version I did have an "add all" button, which I should probably add again, I suppose. The issue is, sometimes there are different quality files of the same track... would make the player very full of files.

As you probably know by now, your playlist is permanent (until you remove a file from the list)... so hopefully at least ONCE when the playlist is set, it will remain, despite the fact that the app is quit, restarted, etc.

You can use the Favorites feature, perhaps to mark the whole concert... which allows you to come back to that set (but yah, you'd have to re-add the files one by one again to the player.)

It sounds like the 3.5 version of the app should have some better player functionality ;-) I'll put that on the short list of todos! There are some other bothersome minor bugs with the player as is, that I'd like to fix too of course.

- very glad you're finding this app useful.

Hunter,

Thanks for taking the time to reply! The "issue" is more of a first world problem and not a hindrance at all. I would still highly recommend this over others I've tried. Thanks again!

I just downloaded your app. It is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. I have some first impressions for you:

I wanted this app initially to stream some performances of symphonies in the background while I work and occasionally use my iPhone for other tasks. So, that is my use case. I have an iPhone5 and I'm sporadically on LTE or 4G.

Some of these notes could be user error, of course.
1. While playing music, if I press the pause/play button on my headphones - iTunes takes over and starts playing music.
2. When I received a phone call, the music didn't start up again after hanging up.
3. I have added 4 songs (the movements of the symphony) to the screen brought up by the SHOW button. This seems to be the play screen. However, when the first song ended, the second song did not automatically start. Full disclosure: I don't think I was in the app at the time.
4. When I tap on the second song, in hopes that it would play, the scrubbing bar appears for a second and then disappears. I have to clear the list of files, hide the play screen, and then click on the next track.
5. The app does not appear in the lock screen while playing.
6. The music controls do not appear when you double tap home and swipe left.

This is a great start to an app and i anxiously await what you do with it!

Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you've downloaded it and are using it.

1. the main play/pause buttons of the device as well as the headphone play/pause button have not been hooked up to the app. That is, I haven't found a way yet to use those controls to affect playback, but I very much would like to. It's on my short list of things I want to to.

2. Automatically starting the music stream up again, is sort of like related to 1. I have to get a proper handle on Audio sessions of the device and see if I can hook it in.

3. Yes... I have to work on this when the app is in the background

4. sound like a bug I should dig into!

5. again, this is sort of related to 1 & 2. I know Pandora has this ability... I'll look into it.

6. Is very much like 5 ;-) Having the app be in use or controlled when it's in the background through other controls...

So these are mostly issues I'm aware of.... and definitely re great things to add for version 1.5 (or 2.0!)... when I get time to work on the app again.

Yes, after I pressed send, I realized that 1,2,5 and 6 are probably all the same solution. Quick googling makes it look like it's way more complicated than Apple made it out to be in old Keynotes - and something that changed for developers in iOS6.

Good luck!

Yes, iOS6 was a painful upgrade. It broke a lot of stable things.... in older apps.

My decision to only support iOS6 (or start there) was definitely to save me time an frustration...

We'll see what iOS7 has in store. I hope I can get into the WWDC again this year.

Hi Hunter,

Thanks for taking the time to create an app. I'm wondering if it's possible to download this app on an android device. I've got a Galaxy S3 but have not had any luck in finding an archive app for my phone. Your app sounds lie exactly what I am looking for.

Thanks!

well, sorry about that.

I'm afraid all I know is iOS, iPod Touches, iPhones and iPads.

Originally I conceived of the app just for the iPad... which makes sense, as a pure book browser and even video player. But the case for the iPhone became a lot clearer when I realized how cool it would be to have an editable audio (and video) playlist that is persistent (stays even when the app is restarted)... that you can use on the go, like the iPad player app... listen to Archive content while on the move (if you have a decent enough internet connection).

alas, I have not yet ventured into Android development. Any code in the app now that will be useful as example for anyone else who wants to develop for Android, I'm definitely willing to help and consult with them!

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about programming of any kind so I am completely useless to this point. Gone are the days when people programmed for everything but mac haha. Hopefully someone will come in as a savior and develop this app for droid...

Version 3.0 of the app is now available in the Itunes App Store.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/internet-archive-companion/id617179709?mt=8

Most of the app was re-written (mostly over my summer vacation in July)

Better network handling with network warning alert if the request times out or if the network is not available, and added ability to reload the main left column top archive collections navigation.

Simpler User Interface
- less clutter and less blank space.
- redesigned Collection page to be easier to use
- redesigned Item page is also easier to use with less clutter. Description and Metadata screens now are pop ups.
- Media Player now fades in/fades out, instead of sliding from the bottom (which interfered with iOS 7 Control Center)
- scanned flip book page image browser now has pinch gesture zoomable scaling.

Addition of Favorites
You can now store a list of your favorite items to come back to later.

Optimized for iOS 7

Great to find this APP because although I can search within books on my computer the keyboard refuses to appear to enter search terms on my ipad.
Is this an archive.org problem or could you solve it within your App ?

eg: try searching < Gibraltar> no results on an ipad

I will check it out.
What frustrates me about the two Internet archive-related iOS apps i already have is their inability to give me recording info in the show info, so that when there are multiple versions of a particular date, I am clueless as to which one is a soundboard, an audience capture, etc. until I choose that source and listen to it. Also sometimes i hear a really good recording and I'm interested in what gear was used, so then I have to use safari or whatever to see the webpage.
Thought I'd share my feelings a bit today.

awesome!

For the iPhone, you need to click the gray "Details" button and most of the items metadata will appear, as well as the HTML description.

For the iPad the entire metadata and description is on the item's view...

I *do* show about as much info as there is for any item. I was very conscious in wanting to deliver as much detail as I could, because like you, I want to know more about the file I'm listening to. I'm somewhat of an audiophile snob myself, and I know how important these details are for sure!

I have a music degree as well as a keen interest in history, which was my original major before switching to music, etc. Meaning, music and audio quality as well as the super details, really matter to me.

The trick for me is to make this layout work for *every* Archive item. It's a big "IA" -- information architecture -- challenge, to say the least ...

Hi,

I've downloaded your app and have been using it for the past few months with no problems. However, I tried to load the app on my ipad today and it kept crashing repeatedly. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but the problem still persists. I have also restarted my device with no success. Am I the only one facing this problem? Please do fix the issue, I love using this app a lot!

Thanks and have a great day :)

Hi,

Sorry the app is crashing, however the Archive's Advanced Search service has not been working since this past Sunday. The app is entirely based on using this resource.

http://archive.org/advancedsearch.php?q=Grateful+Dead&;fl%5B%5D=identifier&sort%5B%5D=&sort%5B%5D=&sort%5B%5D=&rows=50&page=1&output=json&callback=callback&save=yes

Normally that would output search results for the Grateful Dead, but as you can see, nothing is currently output.

I believe the engineers at the Archive are working to fix this. Affects all RSS feeds as well as my app and other services that depend on it.

Also, I'm actively working on version 3.0 of my App, which has a low level built in safe guard to deal with no responses, or even timed out and garbled responses from the IA server.... which is something my app should have had from the beginning as best networking practice.

I'll also try to throw in some announcement layer of my own, where I can notify users about any outage, etc.

I'm glad you like using the app!

- Hunter
